Chaotic Maps and Feigenbaum Constants

Randomly came across this insightful image on the internet. It shows the importance of the Feigenbaum constants:

Going to wikipedia’s page: List of chaotic maps, one can find some really neat mathematical transformations. Arnold’s cat map seems like it would have some neat practical uses.

Structural Harmony of Systems – Eduard Soroko

Today, I read some interesting things on harmony mathematics. Here is a remarkable quote from a guy named Eduard Soroko (I can not find a Wikipedia entry on him):
“The Generalized Golden Proportions are invariants, which allow for natural systems in process of their self-organization to find harmonious structure, stationary regime of their existence, structural and functional stability.”

Here is a link to the paper which contains this quote: Structural Harmony of Systems. I want to find more papers and information on this “Belarusian philosopher.”

Countdown: Our Last, Best Hope for a Future on Earth? – Alan Weisman

Being alive in this century of massive human growth and progress, we sometimes need a reminder that our actions and decisions shape the future of the entire Earth. This reminder came to my attention while reading Countdown: Our Last, Best Hope for a Future on Earth?, by Alan Weisman. After reading, I was struck by an urge to find ways to help the Earth’s environment and I posted a suggestion on my blog. This is my first foray into the category of Environmental, Conservation, and Ecology. I will be looking for a new book to read on these subjects in the near future.

Brainstorming: Ways to Protect the Earth’s Ecosystem (to be continued…)

Why not construct an IPO (initial public offering) with shares representing whole swaths of ecosystems around the world. There are plenty of ways to measure the health and economic benefit of an ecosystem. This information could be treated just as financial statements are about public companies. Thus, the creation of monetary value in stocks which represent ecosystems. These would be trading vehicles uncorrelated with other assets, traditionally “human” assets. Perfect for hedging against “human” assets which have fundamental support from human institutions.

For example: an IPO of 200 million shares representing the Amazon Rain Forest. Thus if they price at $20 per share, then the market cap of the Amazon would be $4 billion. The money raised could be put to use in various ways by a third party. This third party would be responsible for improving the ecosystem. Thus the money would go only towards preservation and building up the ecosystem. All these ideas would be further researched by people more familiar with the field of ecology.

The shares of the Amazon Ecosystem would trade almost totally uncorrelated with most traditional assets; thus allowing a new form of diversification. Some of the downsides would include the fact that other governments own these resources and make decisions independently of asset holders. Or, perhaps these securities could be designed with environmental protection in mind, i.e. a government could not change the ecosystem without approval from a board of directors controlled by the owners of the shares. Hopefully, they would make decisions in the best interest of the environment.

Mathematics of Harmony – Alexey Stakhov

Fascinating book: Mathematics of Harmony by Alexey Stakhov. I found this book while doing some research on Elliott Waves. Other topics of interest: Golden Ratio and Fibonacci p-codes. Chapter nine is fascinating and it’s incredible that George M. Bergman was only twelve years old when he published the paper, A number system with an irrational base.

Who is Alexey Stakhov? Do a Google search on him to learn more about this scientist with over 500 publications, 14 books, and 65 international patents. Note: Do a Google search for the book’s ISBN number: 981277582X to find a pdf on DepositFiles 🙂
