YouTube Channel – ScienceTV and Best0fScience

I came across these two YouTube channels — ScienceTV and Best0fScience. They contain cool visualizations of many topics in astronomy, physics, chemisty, evolution and biology.

Emergence and Complexity – Lecture by Robert Sapolsky

A good lecture by Robert Sapolsky on emergence and complexity in biology — watch here. This was lecture 22 on Human Behavioral Biology. Also, I did not realize that Stanford University had so many YouTube uploads.

Interesting Books on Human Consciousness and the History of Consciousness

The history of consciousness and its origins fascinate me. It seems that either all life (and perhaps the universe itself) is “conscious” or, if false, then there existed an “Adam” who was the first human born with consciousness. These books propose other theories on this idea; they all deal with the brain and consciousness. I have not yet read them, as I am still in the process of reading Godel, Escher, Bach and the Tree of Knowledge.

The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead by Timothy Leary,
Ralph Metzner, and Ram Dass.

Food of the Gods: The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge – A Radical History of Plants, Drugs, and Human Evolution by Terence McKenna

DMT: The Spirit Molecule: A Doctor’s Revolutionary Research into the Biology of Near-Death and Mystical Experiences by Dr. Rick Strassman

The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes

Marijuana Reconsidered – Lester Grinspoon

For a remarkable and insightful book on cannabis sativa, I would suggest reading Marijuana Reconsidered by Lester Grinspoon. The book provided the first real scientific investigation into the psychedelic properties of cannabis sativa. I found the section by Mr. X (Carl Sagan) to be informative, accurate, and humorous. The fact that marijuana was documented, by William Osler, long before the 1930’s to be the most effective cure for a migraine was a complete surprise to me. I highly recommend this book and any other by Lester Grinspoon.

The Diversity of Life – Edward O. Wilson

Edward O. Wilson does a great job exploring the wonderful diversity on Earth in his book The Diversity of Life. If Earth’s biosphere is to continue supporting the conditions for life, then diversity must be conserved and protected. Diversity provides the necessary adaptive power to withstand natural disasters. Wilson writes many great books and this is one of them.
