Foundation – Isaac Asimov

The Foundation novel begins the epic series of novels by Isaac Asimov called The Foundation Series. These novels are a thrilling science-fiction journey through time and space.  Taking place over thousands of years and multiple locations throughout the Milky Way Galaxy, these novels take the reader on a mind bending journey. I recommend this series for any fan of science-fiction and I look forward to watching any movies based on them. (ISBN-13: 978-0553382570)

The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life – Alice Schroeder

After reading many books and articles by Benjamin Graham, I decided to read about the infamous Warren Buffett. The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life provides a lengthy and detailed account of the life of Warren Buffett. Although it offers no direct advice on investments, the reader will gain insight into the mind and lifestyle of one America’s greatest financial minds.

After reading the biography, I believe that his success lies in no specific investment strategy.  It is his overall outlook on life and common sense approach to investing which allows him to avoid the extremes of risk. (ISBN-13: 978-0553384611)

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors – Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan stands as a testament to their brilliance as synthesizers of facts into story. Sagan and Druyan piece together myriads of biological facts to recreate the narrative of natural creation accessible to the non-scientific reader. Starting from the birth of the solar system and ending with the rise of apes, the reader will be left in awe at the beauty of life. The only requirement before reading this book is a curiosity about the natural world and a desire for understanding. (ISBN-13: 978-0345384720)

Sadly, Sagan passed away before the duo could complete a sequel.

John Bogle on Investing: The First 50 Years – John Bogle

John Bogle on Investing: The First 50 Years provides a good insight into the mind of John Bogle, the founder of The Vanguard Group. The only  book I have read by Bogle, it explains in detail his belief that individual stock picking is not worth the effort.  Instead, Bogle argues that the variance of the return on a total market index decreases as an investor considers a longer time horizon. In other words, the fifteen year return will tend to converge toward the fifteen year average return. A more detailed explanation is provided in the book. This approach suggests that the best strategy would be to invest in a low expense fund that follows either the S&P 500, the Wilshire 5000, or some market index. (ISBN-13: 978-0071761031)

Tree of Knowledge – Maturana and Varela

I have yet to read Tree of Knowledge by Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela  (ISBN-13: 978-0877736424). I have the book, sitting in my room. Flipping through the pages, it seems like a must read. The book came to my attention after reading some reviews on Amazon about Godel, Escher, and Bach.
