Earth From Space – NOVA

Well done NOVA. Earth From Space, a NOVA documentary detailing the information revealed about Earth through satellites, is a must see. The visual images of the atmospheric processes and natural phenomenon are the best I have seen and really show the inter-connectedness of the environmental processes on Earth. Follow this link to watch it on YouTube.
Download the HD version here or buy it here.

Didier Sornette: Predicting risk

Very interesting video on “Where are we going? And what can we do?” about financial markets, critical points, ecology, biology, and other issues of the Anthropocene by Didier Sornette. Humans are growing at a super-exponential rate, so what does this mean? He also points out the importance of non-linear behavior in markets and the concept of Dragon-Kings. Also, here is a link to a good interview with Sornette thanks to ZURICH.MINDS.

For anyone interested in watching some of his lectures, here is a link.

Zooniverse – Real Science Online

Zooniverse allows anyone to participate in scientific studies. For example, there is a project called Seafloor Explorer which allows users to scan pictures of the seafloor looking for animal species and types of ground cover to create a vast library of information. There is a project which asks for help in identifying various explosions on the sun and another which finds exoplanets around stars.

The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe without Design – Richard Dawkins

As a sequel  to The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker explains why intelligent design could not be a viable theory for the existence of life and consciousness. My short description of Richard Dawkins‘ book does not do the book justice. Also, watch the YouTube documentary.

The Selfish Gene – Richard Dawkins

Richard Dawkins‘ widely read book, The Selfish Gene, brought forth new ideas in genetics and evolution in 1976. The concept of meme and its implications are fascinating. I first heard about these ideas while reading James Gleick’s book, The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood.
